How to perform wudu (ablution), step by step
The steps in order, what each school makes obligatory, and what breaks wudu
Wudu (ablution) is made before the prayer, when you are no longer in a state of purity. You wash your hands, rinse your mouth and nose, then wash your face and your arms up to the elbows, pass wet hands over your head and ears, and wash your feet up to the ankles, starting with the right.
What the schools agree on
Verse 6 of Surah Al-Ma'idah names four acts on which the schools agree: washing the face, washing the arms up to the elbows, passing wet hands over the head and washing the feet up to the ankles. Without wudu, the prayer is not valid.
What breaks it, for all the schools: whatever comes out of the natural passages (urine, stool, wind), deep sleep and loss of consciousness. After intimate relations or menstruation, it is the full bath (ghusl) that is required.

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janābah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allāh does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful.
The Prophet ﷺ said that the prayer of someone who has lost their state of purity is not accepted until they make ablution again.
Wudu, step by step
Each part is preferably washed three times; once is enough. You start with the right, and go on without a long pause.
-
The intentionan-niyyah
In your heart, you intend to make wudu for the prayer. Saying the tasmiyah (“in the name of Allah”) at the start is recommended; the Hanbalis require it when you remember.
-
The hands
You wash both hands up to the wrists, passing the water between the fingers.
-
The mouthal-madmadah
You take water in your right hand, rinse your mouth, then spit it out.
-
The noseal-istinshaq
You draw a little water into your nose, then blow it out with the help of your left hand.
-
The face
You wash the whole face, from the hairline to the chin, and from one ear to the other.
-
The arms
You wash the right arm, from the hand up to and including the elbow, then the left arm.
-
The headal-mash
You pass your wet hands over your head, from the forehead to the nape of the neck, then back to the forehead. The extent required differs between the schools.
-
The ears
You pass your index fingers inside your ears and your thumbs behind them, with the water left on your hands or with fresh water: the schools differ.
-
The feet
You wash the right foot up to and including the ankle, between the toes and without forgetting the heel, then the left foot.
-
After wudu
You say the testimony of faith, as taught in Sahih Muslim 234; many add the request reported in Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 55, whose chain is debated (sahih according to al-Albani). Then you may pray two rak‘ahs.
What is said
Ash-hadu an lâ ilâha illâ Llâhu wahdahu lâ sharîka lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasûluh. Allâhumma-j'alnî mina t-tawwâbîna wa-j'alnî mina l-mutatahhirîn
I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. O Allah, make me among those who constantly repent and among those who purify themselves.
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 55 · grade: sahih (authentic), graded by al-Albani
‘Uthman showed how the Prophet ﷺ made ablution, each limb washed three times and the head wiped, and said that whoever does it this way and then prays two rak‘ahs with focus has their past sins forgiven.
The Prophet ﷺ also made ablution washing each limb only once.
Aisha said the Prophet ﷺ liked to begin with the right: when putting on shoes, combing his hair, purifying himself and in all things.
‘Abdullah ibn Zayd showed that the Prophet ﷺ passed his hands over his head from the forehead to the nape of the neck, then brought them back to where he started.
Abu Hurayrah urged people to wash each limb fully, because the Prophet ﷺ warned of the Fire for heels the water does not reach.
The four schools, all valid
| Act | Obligatory for |
|---|---|
| Washing the face | All four schools |
| Washing the arms up to the elbows | All four schools |
| Passing the hands over the head | All four schools |
| Washing the feet up to the ankles | All four schools |
| The intention | Malikis and Shafi‘is |
| The order of the steps | Shafi‘is and Hanbalis |
| Continuing without a pause | Malikis and Hanbalis |
| Rubbing each limb | Malikis |
For the Hanbalis, the intention is a condition of wudu rather than one of its acts: it is still required.
And then, the prayer
After wudu, two rak‘ahs are recommended: any surah is fine, a short one is enough. For the prayer itself, the positions page details what is recited.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to renew wudu before each prayer?
No: as long as it is not broken, the same wudu serves for several prayers. Renewing it remains a good deed.
What breaks wudu?
For all the schools: whatever comes out of the natural passages, deep sleep, loss of consciousness. For contact with the other sex or touching the private parts, the schools differ: see the box.
How many times should each limb be washed?
Once is enough; two or three times is the Sunnah.
What if there is no water?
You make dry ablution (tayammum), with clean earth. For a specific case, ask your imam.
