The prayer of Ramadan nights and each night’s juz
Tarawih is the prayer of Ramadan nights, offered after the isha prayer, often in congregation at the mosque. Many mosques recite one juz a night to complete the Quran within the month. The number of rak’ahs varies between schools and mosques: follow your imam.
What is tarawih?
The word comes from the rest (tarwihah) taken between groups of rak’ahs, because the nights of prayer were long.
According to the Prophet ﷺ, whoever prays the nights of Ramadan with faith and hoping for Allah’s reward has their past sins forgiven.
How the congregational prayer began
One night in Ramadan, the Prophet ﷺ prayed in the mosque and people prayed behind him, more of them each following night; then he stopped coming out, fearing this prayer would be made obligatory for them.

Practices differ between schools and mosques: eight rak’ahs in some, twenty in others, followed by witr. Each has its references.
