Ruqyah: the verses and duas of the Sunnah

Al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi, the last surahs and the duas of the Sunnah, with their sources.

Ruqyah is reciting the Quran and transmitted duas over yourself or over a sick person, asking Allah for healing. The Prophet ﷺ recited the last three surahs over himself; his companions recited Al-Fatiha. This page gives these texts and two duas of the Sunnah. It promises nothing: healing comes from Allah.

The verses

Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.

ṣirāṭa lladhīna 'anʿamta ʿalayhim ghayri l-maghḍūbi ʿalayhim wala ḍ-ḍāllīn

The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned [Your] anger or of those who are astray.

  2. Al-Baqarah 2:255

allāhu lā 'ilāha 'illā huwa l-ḥayyu l-qayyūm | lā ta'khudhuhū sinatuw walā nawm | lahū mā fi s-samāwāti wamā fi l-arḍ | man dha lladhī yashfaʿu ʿindahū 'illā bi'idhnih | yaʿlamu mā bayna 'aydīhim wamā khalfahum | walā yuḥīṭūna bishay'im min ʿilmihī 'illā bimā shā' | wasiʿa kursiyyuhu s-samāwāti wal-arḍ | walā ya'ūduhū ḥifẓuhumā | wahuwa l-ʿaliyyu l-ʿaẓīm

Allāh - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

  3. Al-Baqarah 2:285-286

āmana r-rasūlu bimā 'unzila 'ilayhi mir rabbihī wal-mu'minūn | kullun 'āmana billāhi wamalā'ikatihī wakutubihī warusulihī lā nufarriqu bayna 'aḥadim mir rusulih | waqālū samiʿnā wa'aṭaʿnā | ghufrānaka rabbanā wa'ilayka l-maṣīr

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allāh and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination."

lā yukallifu llāhu nafsan 'illā wusʿahā | lahā mā kasabat waʿalayhā ma ktasabat | rabbanā lā tu'ākhidhnā 'in nasīnā 'aw 'akhṭa'nā | rabbanā walā taḥmil ʿalaynā 'iṣran kamā ḥamaltahū ʿala lladhīna min qablinā | rabbanā walā tuḥammilnā mā lā ṭāqata lanā bih | waʿfu ʿannā waghfir lanā warḥamnā | anta mawlānā fanṣurnā ʿala l-qawmi l-kāfirīn

Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."

What to know

Ruqyah is done by yourself, over yourself or a loved one, reciting these texts and blowing lightly. It needs no intermediary to hire, and no object.

It accompanies treatment, it does not replace it. A practice that contains anything other than the Quran and clear duas is to be avoided.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to go to someone to do ruqyah?

No. Anyone can recite these texts over themselves or a loved one, as the Prophet ﷺ did. Be wary of anyone who sells objects, promises healing or mixes anything else with the Quran and the duas.

Does ruqyah replace a doctor?

No. Ruqyah is worship and a request made to Allah; it accompanies treatment. If you are ill, see a doctor.
