Ashura 2027: fasting on 9 and 10 Muharram
Its estimated date, its story and the fast according to the hadiths
Ashura 2027, 10 Muharram 1449, should fall on Tuesday, June 15, 2027, according to the Umm al-Qura calendar. It is the day Allah saved Musa from Pharaoh. The Prophet ﷺ fasted it and intended to fast the 9th too: many fast both days. It is recommended, not obligatory. The date depends on the moon sighting in your country.
What is Ashura?
Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Hijri year and one of the four sacred months. The hadiths link it to the day Allah saved Musa and the Children of Israel.
When he reached Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura, the day Allah had saved Musa and the Children of Israel from their enemy; he said he had more right to Musa than they did, fasted that day and asked others to fast it.
When is Ashura 2027?
According to the Umm al-Qura calendar, Tasu’a, 9 Muharram, falls on Monday, June 14, 2027 and Ashura on Tuesday, June 15, 2027. The fast is kept during the day, from dawn to sunset.

The fast of Ashura
It is a recommended fast, which the Prophet ﷺ was keen to keep. Since the Ramadan fast was prescribed, it has been left to each person’s choice.
The Prophet ﷺ said he hoped from Allah that fasting Ashura wipes out the sins of the past year.
Ibn ʿAbbas said he never saw the Prophet ﷺ seek out the fast of any day, preferring it over others, as much as the day of Ashura, nor of any month as much as Ramadan.
ʿA’ishah reported that Quraysh fasted Ashura before Islam and that the Prophet ﷺ fasted it too; once the Ramadan fast was prescribed, fasting Ashura was left to each person’s choice.
Also fasting 9 Muharram (Tasu’a)
Many fast the 9th and the 10th, following the intention the Prophet ﷺ expressed at the end of his life. Others fast only the 10th: most schools accept it, while the Hanafi school prefers not to fast it alone. For your situation, ask the imam of your mosque for advice.
When he was told that the Jews and Christians honoured this day, the Prophet ﷺ said he would fast the ninth the following year, if Allah willed; he passed away before then.
Musa saved, in the Quran
The Quran tells the story of Musa and Pharaoh several times. The passage of the parted sea describes the rescue this day recalls.
Surah Ash-Shu'ara' tells how Allah parted the sea for Musa and his people and saved them from Pharaoh (verses 61 to 67). Verses 26:61 to 67 in Surah Ash-Shu'ara'
Frequently asked questions
Is fasting on Ashura obligatory?
No. Since the Ramadan fast was prescribed, everyone is free to fast it, as ʿA’ishah reported. It is a recommended fast.
Can I fast only 10 Muharram?
Many do, and most schools accept it; the Hanafi school prefers not to fast it alone. The Prophet ﷺ intended to fast the 9th as well, which is why many fast both days. For your situation, ask the imam of your mosque for advice.
Why does the date of Ashura change every year?
The Hijri calendar follows the moon: each year Ashura comes about eleven days earlier in the Gregorian calendar. The exact day also depends on the sighting of the Muharram crescent in your country.
