Helping children memorize the Quran
The shortest surahs and tips for parents
To help a child memorize the Quran, start with the shortest surahs and let them listen often, gently. A few minutes a day is enough. The shortest surahs of the Quran, counted letter by letter, are Al-Kawthar, Al-Ikhlas, Al-'Asr. Recite together, praise every step forward, and never force it.
The shortest surahs of the Quran
The table ranks the surahs by number of letters, shortest first. It is a good order for a young child.
Learning by ear
A young child first keeps what they hear. Play the surah several times a day: on waking up, in the car, before sleep.
Recite a verse, let them repeat it, then move to the next one. When they know the surah, let them recite it alone, and listen.
The role of parents
Example matters more than instructions: a child who hears their parents recite wants to recite too.
The Prophet ﷺ counted among the best of people those who learn the Quran and teach it.
No pressure
Short sessions, with joy. Celebrate every surah learned. If the child gets tired, stop and pick up the next day: the Quran should stay a happy moment.
Frequently asked questions
At what age can a child start?
As soon as they talk, by listening and repeating. Around six or seven, they can follow a small regular plan.
How much time a day for a child?
Five to fifteen minutes, depending on age. A little every day beats one long session.
Do they need to read Arabic?
Not to start: the ear is enough for short surahs. Reading comes later and helps with longer surahs.
How can I recite from memory and get corrected?
In the Tilawa app, the verses hide and you recite from memory, out loud. The app shows you the words you forgot or swapped. You revise surah by surah, juz by juz.
