Duas for getting dressed and for new clothes

The duas

1. When getting dressed

   الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

   Al-hamdu lillâhi l-ladhî kasânî hâdhâ th-thawba wa razaqanîhi min ghayri hawlin minnî wa lâ quwwah

   Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any strength or power on my part.

2. When wearing a new garment

   اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ أَنْتَ كَسَوْتَنِيهِ، أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِهِ وَخَيْرِ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهِ وَشَرِّ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ

   Allâhumma laka l-hamdu anta kasawtanîh, as'aluka min khayrihi wa khayri mâ suni'a lah, wa a'ûdhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri mâ suni'a lah

   O Allah, to You is all praise: You have clothed me with it. I ask You for its good and the good of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for.

3. What you say to someone wearing a new garment

   تُبْلِي وَيُخْلِفُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى

   Tublî wa yukhlifu Llâhu ta'âlâ

   May you wear it out, and may Allah the Most High give you another in its place.

4. Wishing good to someone putting on a new garment

   الْبَسْ جَدِيدًا وَعِشْ حَمِيدًا وَمُتْ شَهِيدًا

   Ilbas jadîdan wa 'ish hamîdan wa mut shahîdan

   Wear it anew, live praiseworthily and die a martyr.

When to say them

The praise is said while putting on your clothes, every day. The dua for new clothes, the first time you wear them.

The wish for new clothes is said to the person themselves, with a smile: it is a courtesy of the Sunnah.
