Al-Baqara

وَإِذْ

wa-idh

And when

وَٰعَدْنَا

wāʿadnā

We appointed

مُوسَىٰٓ

mūsā

(for) Musa

أَرْبَعِينَ

arbaʿīna

forty

لَيْلَةًۭ

laylatan

nights

ثُمَّ

thumma

Then

ٱتَّخَذْتُمُ

ittakhadhtumu

you took

ٱلْعِجْلَ

l-ʿij'la

the calf

مِنۢ

min

from

بَعْدِهِۦ

baʿdihi

after him

وَأَنتُمْ

wa-antum

and you

ظَـٰلِمُونَ

ẓālimūna

(were) wrongdoers

ثُمَّ

thumma

Then

عَفَوْنَا

ʿafawnā

We forgave

عَنكُم

ʿankum

you

مِّنۢ

min

from

بَعْدِ

baʿdi

after

ذَٰلِكَ

dhālika

that

لَعَلَّكُمْ

laʿallakum

so that you may

تَشْكُرُونَ

tashkurūna

(be) grateful

وَإِذْ

wa-idh

And when

ءَاتَيْنَا

ātaynā

We gave

مُوسَى

mūsā

Musa

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

l-kitāba

the Book

وَٱلْفُرْقَانَ

wal-fur'qāna

and the Criterion

لَعَلَّكُمْ

laʿallakum

perhaps you

تَهْتَدُونَ

tahtadūna

(would be) guided

وَإِذْ

wa-idh

And when

قَالَ

qāla

said

مُوسَىٰ

mūsā

Musa

لِقَوْمِهِۦ

liqawmihi

to his people

يَـٰقَوْمِ

yāqawmi

O my people

إِنَّكُمْ

innakum

Indeed, you

ظَلَمْتُمْ

ẓalamtum

[you] have wronged

أَنفُسَكُم

anfusakum

yourselves

بِٱتِّخَاذِكُمُ

bi-ittikhādhikumu

by your taking

ٱلْعِجْلَ

l-ʿij'la

the calf

فَتُوبُوٓا۟

fatūbū

So turn in repentance

إِلَىٰ

ilā

to

بَارِئِكُمْ

bāri-ikum

your Creator

فَٱقْتُلُوٓا۟

fa-uq'tulū

and kill

أَنفُسَكُمْ

anfusakum

yourselves

ذَٰلِكُمْ

dhālikum

That

خَيْرٌۭ

khayrun

(is) better

لَّكُمْ

lakum

for you

عِندَ

ʿinda

with

بَارِئِكُمْ

bāri-ikum

your Creator

فَتَابَ

fatāba

Then He turned

عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ

ʿalaykum

towards you

إِنَّهُۥ

innahu

Indeed He

هُوَ

huwa

He

ٱلتَّوَّابُ

l-tawābu

(is) the-returning

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

l-raḥīmu

the Most Merciful

وَإِذْ

wa-idh

And when

قُلْتُمْ

qul'tum

you said

يَـٰمُوسَىٰ

yāmūsā

O Musa

لَن

lan

Never

نُّؤْمِنَ

nu'mina

(will) we believe

لَكَ

laka

in you

حَتَّىٰ

ḥattā

until

نَرَى

narā

we see

ٱللَّهَ

l-laha

Allah

جَهْرَةًۭ

jahratan

manifestly

فَأَخَذَتْكُمُ

fa-akhadhatkumu

So seized you

ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ

l-ṣāʿiqatu

the thunderbolt

وَأَنتُمْ

wa-antum

while you

تَنظُرُونَ

tanẓurūna

(were) looking

ثُمَّ

thumma

Then

بَعَثْنَـٰكُم

baʿathnākum

We revived you

مِّنۢ

min

from

بَعْدِ

baʿdi

after

مَوْتِكُمْ

mawtikum

your death

لَعَلَّكُمْ

laʿallakum

so that you may

تَشْكُرُونَ

tashkurūna

(be) grateful

وَظَلَّلْنَا

waẓallalnā

And We shaded

عَلَيْكُمُ

ʿalaykumu

[over] you

ٱلْغَمَامَ

l-ghamāma

(with) [the] clouds

وَأَنزَلْنَا

wa-anzalnā

and We sent down

عَلَيْكُمُ

ʿalaykumu

to you

ٱلْمَنَّ

l-mana

[the] manna

وَٱلسَّلْوَىٰ ۖ

wal-salwā

and [the] quails

كُلُوا۟

kulū

Eat

مِن

min

from

طَيِّبَـٰتِ

ṭayyibāti

(the) good things

مَا

mā

that

رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ ۖ

razaqnākum

We have provided you

وَمَا

wamā

And not

ظَلَمُونَا

ẓalamūnā

they wronged Us

وَلَـٰكِن

walākin

but

كَانُوٓا۟

kānū

they were

أَنفُسَهُمْ

anfusahum

(to) themselves

يَظْلِمُونَ

yaẓlimūna

doing wrong

وَإِذْ

wa-idh

And when

قُلْنَا

qul'nā

We said

ٱدْخُلُوا۟

ud'khulū

Enter

هَـٰذِهِ

hādhihi

this

ٱلْقَرْيَةَ

l-qaryata

town

فَكُلُوا۟

fakulū

then eat

مِنْهَا

min'hā

from

حَيْثُ

ḥaythu

wherever

شِئْتُمْ

shi'tum

you wish[ed]

رَغَدًۭا

raghadan

abundantly

وَٱدْخُلُوا۟

wa-ud'khulū

and enter

ٱلْبَابَ

l-bāba

the gate

سُجَّدًۭا

sujjadan

prostrating

وَقُولُوا۟

waqūlū

And say

حِطَّةٌۭ

ḥiṭṭatun

Repentance

نَّغْفِرْ

naghfir

We will forgive

لَكُمْ

lakum

for you

خَطَـٰيَـٰكُمْ ۚ

khaṭāyākum

your sins

وَسَنَزِيدُ

wasanazīdu

And We will increase

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

l-muḥ'sinīna

the good-doers (in reward)

فَبَدَّلَ

fabaddala

But changed

ٱلَّذِينَ

alladhīna

those who

ظَلَمُوا۟

ẓalamū

wronged

قَوْلًا

qawlan

(the) word

غَيْرَ

ghayra

other (than)

ٱلَّذِى

alladhī

(that) which

قِيلَ

qīla

was said

لَهُمْ

lahum

to them

فَأَنزَلْنَا

fa-anzalnā

so We sent down

عَلَى

ʿalā

upon

ٱلَّذِينَ

alladhīna

those who

ظَلَمُوا۟

ẓalamū

wronged

رِجْزًۭا

rij'zan

a punishment

مِّنَ

mina

from

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

l-samāi

the sky

بِمَا

bimā

because

كَانُوا۟

kānū

they were

يَفْسُقُونَ

yafsuqūna

defiantly disobeying

۞ وَإِذِ

wa-idhi

And when

ٱسْتَسْقَىٰ

is'tasqā

asked (for) water

مُوسَىٰ

mūsā

Musa

لِقَوْمِهِۦ

liqawmihi

for his people

فَقُلْنَا

faqul'nā

[so] We said

ٱضْرِب

iḍ'rib

Strike

بِّعَصَاكَ

biʿaṣāka

with your staff

ٱلْحَجَرَ ۖ

l-ḥajara

the stone

فَٱنفَجَرَتْ

fa-infajarat

Then gushed forth

مِنْهُ

min'hu

from it

ٱثْنَتَا

ith'natā

(of)

عَشْرَةَ

ʿashrata

twelve

عَيْنًۭا ۖ

ʿaynan

springs

قَدْ

qad

Indeed

عَلِمَ

ʿalima

knew

كُلُّ

kullu

all

أُنَاسٍۢ

unāsin

(the) people

مَّشْرَبَهُمْ ۖ

mashrabahum

their drinking place

كُلُوا۟

kulū

Eat

وَٱشْرَبُوا۟

wa-ish'rabū

and drink

مِن

min

from

رِّزْقِ

riz'qi

(the) provision (of)

ٱللَّهِ

l-lahi

Allah

وَلَا

walā

and (do) not

تَعْثَوْا۟

taʿthaw

act wickedly

فِى

fī

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

l-arḍi

the earth

مُفْسِدِينَ

muf'sidīna

spreading corruption

وَإِذْ

wa-idh

And when

قُلْتُمْ

qul'tum

you said

يَـٰمُوسَىٰ

yāmūsā

O Musa

لَن

lan

Never (will)

نَّصْبِرَ

naṣbira

we endure

عَلَىٰ

ʿalā

[on]

طَعَامٍۢ

ṭaʿāmin

food

وَٰحِدٍۢ

wāḥidin

(of) one (kind)

فَٱدْعُ

fa-ud'ʿu

so pray

لَنَا

lanā

for us

رَبَّكَ

rabbaka

(to) your Lord

يُخْرِجْ

yukh'rij

to bring forth

لَنَا

lanā

for us

مِمَّا

mimmā

out of what

تُنۢبِتُ

tunbitu

grows

ٱلْأَرْضُ

l-arḍu

the earth

مِنۢ

min

of

بَقْلِهَا

baqlihā

its herbs

وَقِثَّآئِهَا

waqithāihā

[and] its cucumbers

وَفُومِهَا

wafūmihā

[and] its garlic

وَعَدَسِهَا

waʿadasihā

[and] its lentils

وَبَصَلِهَا ۖ

wabaṣalihā

and its onions

قَالَ

qāla

He said

أَتَسْتَبْدِلُونَ

atastabdilūna

Would you exchange

ٱلَّذِى

alladhī

that which

هُوَ

huwa

[it]

أَدْنَىٰ

adnā

(is) inferior

بِٱلَّذِى

bi-alladhī

for that which

هُوَ

huwa

[it]

خَيْرٌ ۚ

khayrun

(is) better

ٱهْبِطُوا۟

ih'biṭū

Go down

مِصْرًۭا

miṣ'ran

(to) a city

فَإِنَّ

fa-inna

so indeed

لَكُم

lakum

for you

مَّا

mā

(is) what

سَأَلْتُمْ ۗ

sa-altum

you have asked (for)

وَضُرِبَتْ

waḍuribat

And were struck

عَلَيْهِمُ

ʿalayhimu

on them

ٱلذِّلَّةُ

l-dhilatu

the humiliation

وَٱلْمَسْكَنَةُ

wal-maskanatu

and the misery

وَبَآءُو

wabāū

and they drew on themselves

بِغَضَبٍۢ

bighaḍabin

wrath

مِّنَ

mina

of

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

l-lahi

Allah

ذَٰلِكَ

dhālika

That (was)

بِأَنَّهُمْ

bi-annahum

because they

كَانُوا۟

kānū

used to

يَكْفُرُونَ

yakfurūna

disbelieve

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

biāyāti

in (the) Signs

ٱللَّهِ

l-lahi

(of) Allah

وَيَقْتُلُونَ

wayaqtulūna

and kill

ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ

l-nabiyīna

the Prophets

بِغَيْرِ

bighayri

without (any)

ٱلْحَقِّ ۗ

l-ḥaqi

[the] right

ذَٰلِكَ

dhālika

That

بِمَا

bimā

(was) because

عَصَوا۟

ʿaṣaw

they disobeyed

وَّكَانُوا۟

wakānū

and they were

يَعْتَدُونَ

yaʿtadūna

transgressing

إِنَّ

inna

Indeed

ٱلَّذِينَ

alladhīna

those who

ءَامَنُوا۟

āmanū

believed

وَٱلَّذِينَ

wa-alladhīna

and those who

هَادُوا۟

hādū

became Jews

وَٱلنَّصَـٰرَىٰ

wal-naṣārā

and the Christians

وَٱلصَّـٰبِـِٔينَ

wal-ṣābiīna

and the Sabians

مَنْ

man

who

ءَامَنَ

āmana

believed

بِٱللَّهِ

bil-lahi

in Allah

وَٱلْيَوْمِ

wal-yawmi

and the Day

ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ

l-ākhiri

[the] Last

وَعَمِلَ

waʿamila

and did

صَـٰلِحًۭا

ṣāliḥan

righteous deeds

فَلَهُمْ

falahum

so for them

أَجْرُهُمْ

ajruhum

their reward

عِندَ

ʿinda

(is) with

رَبِّهِمْ

rabbihim

their Lord

وَلَا

walā

and no

خَوْفٌ

khawfun

fear

عَلَيْهِمْ

ʿalayhim

on them

وَلَا

walā

and not

هُمْ

hum

they

يَحْزَنُونَ

yaḥzanūna

will grieve

وَإِذْ

wa-idh

And when

أَخَذْنَا

akhadhnā

We took

مِيثَـٰقَكُمْ

mīthāqakum

your covenant

وَرَفَعْنَا

warafaʿnā

and We raised

فَوْقَكُمُ

fawqakumu

over you

ٱلطُّورَ

l-ṭūra

the mount

خُذُوا۟

khudhū

Hold

مَآ

mā

what

ءَاتَيْنَـٰكُم

ātaynākum

We have given you

بِقُوَّةٍۢ

biquwwatin

with strength

وَٱذْكُرُوا۟

wa-udh'kurū

and remember

مَا

mā

what

فِيهِ

fīhi

(is) in it

لَعَلَّكُمْ

laʿallakum

perhaps you

تَتَّقُونَ

tattaqūna

(would become) righteous

ثُمَّ

thumma

Then

تَوَلَّيْتُم

tawallaytum

you turned away

مِّنۢ

min

from

بَعْدِ

baʿdi

after

ذَٰلِكَ ۖ

dhālika

that

فَلَوْلَا

falawlā

So if not

فَضْلُ

faḍlu

(for the) Grace

ٱللَّهِ

l-lahi

(of) Allah

عَلَيْكُمْ

ʿalaykum

upon you

وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ

waraḥmatuhu

and His Mercy

لَكُنتُم

lakuntum

surely you would have been

مِّنَ

mina

of

ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ

l-khāsirīna

the losers

وَلَقَدْ

walaqad

And indeed

عَلِمْتُمُ

ʿalim'tumu

you knew

ٱلَّذِينَ

alladhīna

those who

ٱعْتَدَوْا۟

iʿ'tadaw

transgressed

مِنكُمْ

minkum

among you

فِى

fī

in

ٱلسَّبْتِ

l-sabti

the (matter of) Sabbath

فَقُلْنَا

faqul'nā

So We said

لَهُمْ

lahum

to them

كُونُوا۟

kūnū

Be

قِرَدَةً

qiradatan

apes

خَـٰسِـِٔينَ

khāsiīna

despised

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهَا

fajaʿalnāhā

So We made it

نَكَـٰلًۭا

nakālan

a deterrent punishment

لِّمَا

limā

for those

بَيْنَ

bayna

(in) front

يَدَيْهَا

yadayhā

(of) them

وَمَا

wamā

and those

خَلْفَهَا

khalfahā

after them

وَمَوْعِظَةًۭ

wamawʿiẓatan

and an admonition

لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

lil'muttaqīna

for those who fear (Allah)

وَإِذْ

wa-idh

And when

قَالَ

qāla

said

مُوسَىٰ

mūsā

Musa

لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ

liqawmihi

to his people

إِنَّ

inna

Indeed

ٱللَّهَ

l-laha

Allah

يَأْمُرُكُمْ

yamurukum

commands you

أَن

an

that

تَذْبَحُوا۟

tadhbaḥū

you slaughter

بَقَرَةًۭ ۖ

baqaratan

a cow

قَالُوٓا۟

qālū

They said

أَتَتَّخِذُنَا

atattakhidhunā

Do you take us

هُزُوًۭا ۖ

huzuwan

(in) ridicule

قَالَ

qāla

He said

أَعُوذُ

aʿūdhu

I seek refuge

بِٱللَّهِ

bil-lahi

in Allah

أَنْ

an

that

أَكُونَ

akūna

I be

مِنَ

mina

among

ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ

l-jāhilīna

the ignorant

قَالُوا۟

qālū

They said

ٱدْعُ

ud'ʿu

Pray

لَنَا

lanā

for us

رَبَّكَ

rabbaka

(to) your Lord

يُبَيِّن

yubayyin

to make clear

لَّنَا

lanā

to us

مَا

mā

what

هِىَ ۚ

hiya

it (is)

قَالَ

qāla

He said

إِنَّهُۥ

innahu

Indeed, He

يَقُولُ

yaqūlu

says

إِنَّهَا

innahā

[Indeed] it

بَقَرَةٌۭ

baqaratun

(is) a cow

لَّا

lā

not

فَارِضٌۭ

fāriḍun

old

وَلَا

walā

and not

بِكْرٌ

bik'run

young

عَوَانٌۢ

ʿawānun

middle aged

بَيْنَ

bayna

between

ذَٰلِكَ ۖ

dhālika

that

فَٱفْعَلُوا۟

fa-if'ʿalū

so do

مَا

mā

what

تُؤْمَرُونَ

tu'marūna

you are commanded

قَالُوا۟

qālū

They said

ٱدْعُ

ud'ʿu

Pray

لَنَا

lanā

for us

رَبَّكَ

rabbaka

(to) your Lord

يُبَيِّن

yubayyin

to make clear

لَّنَا

lanā

to us

مَا

mā

what

لَوْنُهَا ۚ

lawnuhā

(is) its color

قَالَ

qāla

He said

إِنَّهُۥ

innahu

Indeed, He

يَقُولُ

yaqūlu

says

إِنَّهَا

innahā

'[Indeed] it is

بَقَرَةٌۭ

baqaratun

a cow

صَفْرَآءُ

ṣafrāu

yellow

فَاقِعٌۭ

fāqiʿun

bright

لَّوْنُهَا

lawnuhā

(in) its color

تَسُرُّ

tasurru

pleasing

ٱلنَّـٰظِرِينَ

l-nāẓirīna

(to) those who see (it).'

قَالُوا۟

qālū

They said

ٱدْعُ

ud'ʿu

Pray

لَنَا

lanā

for us

رَبَّكَ

rabbaka

(to) your Lord

يُبَيِّن

yubayyin

to make clear

لَّنَا

lanā

to us

مَا

mā

what

هِىَ

hiya

it (is)

إِنَّ

inna

Indeed

ٱلْبَقَرَ

l-baqara

[the] cows

تَشَـٰبَهَ

tashābaha

look alike

عَلَيْنَا

ʿalaynā

to us

وَإِنَّآ

wa-innā

And indeed we

إِن

in

if

شَآءَ

shāa

wills

ٱللَّهُ

l-lahu

Allah

لَمُهْتَدُونَ

lamuh'tadūna

(will) surely be those who are guided

قَالَ

qāla

He said

إِنَّهُۥ

innahu

Indeed, He

يَقُولُ

yaqūlu

says

إِنَّهَا

innahā

[Indeed] it

بَقَرَةٌۭ

baqaratun

(is) a cow

لَّا

lā

not

ذَلُولٌۭ

dhalūlun

trained

تُثِيرُ

tuthīru

to plough

ٱلْأَرْضَ

l-arḍa

the earth

وَلَا

walā

and not

تَسْقِى

tasqī

water

ٱلْحَرْثَ

l-ḥartha

the field

مُسَلَّمَةٌۭ

musallamatun

sound

لَّا

lā

no

شِيَةَ

shiyata

blemish

فِيهَا ۚ

fīhā

in it

قَالُوا۟

qālū

They said

ٱلْـَٔـٰنَ

l-āna

Now

جِئْتَ

ji'ta

you have come

بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ

bil-ḥaqi

with the truth

فَذَبَحُوهَا

fadhabaḥūhā

So they slaughtered it

وَمَا

wamā

and not

كَادُوا۟

kādū

they were near

يَفْعَلُونَ

yafʿalūna

(to) doing (it)

وَإِذْ

wa-idh

And when

قَتَلْتُمْ

qataltum

you killed

نَفْسًۭا

nafsan

a man

فَٱدَّٰرَْٰٔتُمْ

fa-iddāratum

then you disputed

فِيهَا ۖ

fīhā

concerning it

وَٱللَّهُ

wal-lahu

but Allah

مُخْرِجٌۭ

mukh'rijun

(is) the One Who brought forth

مَّا

mā

what

كُنتُمْ

kuntum

you were

تَكْتُمُونَ

taktumūna

concealing

فَقُلْنَا

faqul'nā

So We said

ٱضْرِبُوهُ

iḍ'ribūhu

Strike him

بِبَعْضِهَا ۚ

bibaʿḍihā

with a part of it

كَذَٰلِكَ

kadhālika

Like this

يُحْىِ

yuḥ'yī

revives

ٱللَّهُ

l-lahu

Allah

ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ

l-mawtā

the dead

وَيُرِيكُمْ

wayurīkum

and shows you

ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ

āyātihi

His Signs

لَعَلَّكُمْ

laʿallakum

perhaps you may

تَعْقِلُونَ

taʿqilūna

use your intellect

ثُمَّ

thumma

Then

قَسَتْ

qasat

hardened

قُلُوبُكُم

qulūbukum

your hearts

مِّنۢ

min

from

بَعْدِ

baʿdi

after

ذَٰلِكَ

dhālika

that

فَهِىَ

fahiya

so they

كَٱلْحِجَارَةِ

kal-ḥijārati

(became) like [the] stones

أَوْ

aw

or

أَشَدُّ

ashaddu

stronger

قَسْوَةًۭ ۚ

qaswatan

(in) hardness

وَإِنَّ

wa-inna

And indeed

مِنَ

mina

from

ٱلْحِجَارَةِ

l-ḥijārati

the stones

لَمَا

lamā

certainly (there are some) which

يَتَفَجَّرُ

yatafajjaru

gush forth

مِنْهُ

min'hu

from it

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۚ

l-anhāru

[the] rivers

وَإِنَّ

wa-inna

and indeed

مِنْهَا

min'hā

from them

لَمَا

lamā

certainly (there are some) which

يَشَّقَّقُ

yashaqqaqu

split

فَيَخْرُجُ

fayakhruju

so comes out

مِنْهُ

min'hu

from it

ٱلْمَآءُ ۚ

l-māu

[the] water

وَإِنَّ

wa-inna

and indeed

مِنْهَا

min'hā

from them

لَمَا

lamā

certainly (there are some) which

يَهْبِطُ

yahbiṭu

fall down

مِنْ

min

from

خَشْيَةِ

khashyati

fear

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

l-lahi

(of) Allah

وَمَا

wamā

And not

ٱللَّهُ

l-lahu

(is) Allah

بِغَـٰفِلٍ

bighāfilin

unaware

عَمَّا

ʿammā

of what

تَعْمَلُونَ

taʿmalūna

you do

۞ أَفَتَطْمَعُونَ

afataṭmaʿūna

Do you hope

أَن

an

that

يُؤْمِنُوا۟

yu'minū

they will believe

لَكُمْ

lakum

[for] you

وَقَدْ

waqad

while indeed

كَانَ

kāna

(there) has been

فَرِيقٌۭ

farīqun

a party

مِّنْهُمْ

min'hum

of them

يَسْمَعُونَ

yasmaʿūna

(who used to) hear

كَلَـٰمَ

kalāma

(the) words

ٱللَّهِ

l-lahi

(of) Allah

ثُمَّ

thumma

then

يُحَرِّفُونَهُۥ

yuḥarrifūnahu

they distort it

مِنۢ

min

from

بَعْدِ

baʿdi

after

مَا

mā

[what]

عَقَلُوهُ

ʿaqalūhu

they understood it

وَهُمْ

wahum

while they

يَعْلَمُونَ

yaʿlamūna

know
